RED-NECKED GREBE
 |
I have always considered this to be a hit-or-miss species in central NY. Most years, you will see one or two in migration in the spring, and perhaps a few in the autumn. Some years, I miss seeing them completely! In the winter of 2003, massive numbers of Red-necked Grebes began showing up all over the Northeast and Midwest. The current theory is the Birds were frozen out from traditional wintering grounds on the Great Lakes. Whatever the reason, I observed 27 individuals on Thursday, March 6 2003. A few were kind enough to pose for photos...
At first, the Grebes swam away at my approach. Luckily, their favorite feeding area was right along the shore of the fisherman's access area. Oswego River, in Phoenix, NY. March 2003. CP-4500, Swarovski ST-80 HD.
As many as six Grebes would eventually decide to dive and feed just 20 feet away from me. Oswego River, in Phoenix, NY. March 2003. CP-4500, Swarovski ST-80 HD.
Some Birds, such as this one, showed quite a bit of color and were nearly in their breeding plumage. Oswego River, in Phoenix, NY. March 2003. CP-4500, Swarovski ST-80 HD.
Most Birds were still very drab, but had VERY yellow bills! Oswego River, in Phoenix, NY. March 2003. CP-4500, Swarovski ST-80 HD.
Late in the afternoon, the sun finally emerged to give me a better photographic advantage. Oswego River, in Phoenix, NY. March 2003. CP-4500, Swarovski ST-80 HD.
