SHARP-SHINNED HAWK

ornamental

Ever wonder why sometimes there are numerous Birds at your feeder, then they all mysteriously head for cover and don't return for hours? Maybe this could be the reason...

This Bird delighted in swooping down into the feeding area, and acting very fierce. I never saw him try to kill anything, he always went straight for the bath. Sabal Palm Grove, near Brownsville, TX. Initially, due to the sheer size of this Accipiter, I labeled it a Cooper's Hawk. Tom Carrolan kindly e-mailed and informed me that the ID was incorrect. Looking at the field guides, I noted how the juv. Coopers Hawks are thinly streaked on the breast with chocolate brown. The Sharp-shinned Hawks have broader, rusty streaks. THANKS TOM!!
